Week 10

During the past two weeks of class, we discussed masculinity and started to touch on femininity. Both of these terms and their definitions have been around for ages. Masculinity is where a boy has to be tough, strong, built, and most importantly, not "girly". If a boy/man does not fit such expectations of themselves, they are often brought down since they aren't what they are expected to be. Such standards of men are very wrong because people are born to be who they want to be not what society wants them to be and if they are punished for being themselves or different from the rest, it isn't fair to them for just being who they truly want to be looked as. I believe i is important to be who you want to be rather than what society wants you to be because if you become what society wants, then everyone will start to be the same and that would lose the value of being unique. This is the same for women and femininity; women have high standards as well such as having a good body, their clothing style, what they do, who they talk to, and so on. Both genders have very high standards of them and if they don't meet them then they are looked down upon which isn't fair to them because everyone has the right to be who they wants to be and should not be ashamed for being themselves. This phase of meeting the expectation start up in middle school where students now face the pressure of changing themselves to gain more friends or to be ore liked and that isn't okay since it will stick around for majority of their lives. Masculinity and femininity should not be such a big influence on students lives as it inflicts unneeded pressure upon them.

  1. I liked this 'call to action' to hinder the influence of gender roles. I also believe that it is a detrimental force and that we have a power to stop it. I was especially intrigued by the part where you discussed how this virulent culture perpetuates, through the implementation into our society at a young age.
