Week 7

1.      What is Anzaldua's purpose and how do you know?
The purpose of this piece is to show how being in touch with your native language is a good thing because it makes you stand out and be different from the rest and that your language can shape your identity because it’s apart of a person and makes them be their true self

2.      Much of this essay is written in Spanish or a variant of it. In some instances, Anzaldua translates into English, though not all the time. As a reader, how do you react to the passages written in Spanish? How does your level of fluency with that language affect your response? Why do you think she does this?
I react with an accepting mind set because it pulls out the purpose the author wants to convey to the readers, it didn’t phase me too much either because I understood what she was saying since I’ve taken Spanish classes before. By having Spanish mixed into the text untranslated it emphasizes that she’s in touch with her roots and that she needs both languages to be able to convey her message even though the reader may not be able to comprehend what she was saying.

3.      In paragraphs 14-17, Anzaldua draws on her personal experiences to illustrate the eight languages she enumerates. Explain why you think that this focus makes readers feel excluded or included. Then discuss whether Anzaldua’s personal experience interwoven throughout the essay strengthens or weakens her argument.
It can make readers feel included if they can relate to being bilingual, like me, because they can understand her perspective of the topic better than people who only speak English. I think by relating her personal experiences to the essay strengths her argument because she can take her analysis to the next level by being able to show that she relates closely to what she’s arguing and it help provides more evidence throughout the piece.

4.      Why is English a “neutral language” (para 25), according to Anzaldua? In what situations that you have observed or read does English become a neutral ground for those who speak different languages? Do you agree with Anzaldua that it is a “neutral language”? Why or why not?
It’s a neutral language because people can’t be judge for speaking English compared to a foreign language where people might judge it because it isn’t what they are used to. Sometimes people feel embarrassed about their native language and use English instead so they don’t have attention drawn to them because they are different. I think English is a neutral language because it’s something that everyone can understand and it is universal so it helps in numerous situations. I have a native language that my parents speak at home but it was never my first language so I can only understand what they say but I can’t reply back to them in my language so I speak to them in English. Many people do this which can cause it to be a neutral language
