Week 4

During class this week we switched our focus from the American Dream to satire. Satire is “writing that aims to criticize problematic aspects of society”. This is really helpful when trying to introduce serious matters because it says it in a humorous way to lessen the seriousness of the topic so that people can see the point of the topic while hearing it in a humorous manner. Satire can be portrayed in two different manners: it can either be serious or humorous way. If it’s displayed in a serious manner, it is known as juvenile satire which is when the speaker attacks reader with disdain. Humorous satire is when you explain it in a stupid way. In class we watched a video where these Miss America contestants were asked a question and they gave ridiculous answers that were used to portray how beauty pageant girls are dumb. Satire pieces can either be effective or not effective. It works really well if it contains different Elements like sarcasm and analogies while also getting the point across can cause it to be a strong, effective piece. If it doesn’t include the different elements and fails to be humorous, it’s not an effective piece. My favorite type of satire is definitely humorous because I can understand what point is being made while it not being completely serious which causes the work to be more enjoyable to read.

  1. I like your reflection of the satire introduction we did in class and the addition of which was your favorite. It also offered a concise summarization of the notes we did in class that can be easy to use as a reminder of some pointers of satire.
